PRIMKT Index

Principal Market Price (PRIMKT) Indexes

Access real-time and historical Principal Market Price (PRIMKT) Indexes through CoinAPI's Indexes API.

CoinAPI PRIMKT Indexes provide transparent crypto reference prices derived from each asset's principal market — the eligible spot trading venue with the highest trading volume. Built for institutions, funds, valuation providers, trading firms, and developers, PRIMKT delivers reliable market-based prices for digital asset valuation, financial reporting, portfolio management, audit support, and benchmark construction.

What Are Principal Market Price (PRIMKT) Indexes?

A Principal Market Price (PRIMKT) Index identifies the principal market for a cryptocurrency trading pair and uses the latest traded price from that market as the benchmark value.

Unlike methodologies that aggregate prices across multiple exchanges, PRIMKT answers a different question: “Which active market is the primary source of price discovery for this asset right now?”

To determine that answer, CoinAPI identifies the eligible spot exchange with the highest trading volume during a defined lookup period and uses its most recent traded price as the index value.

The PRIMKT Rule

In simple terms:

primkt-rule
PRIMKT = Latest traded price from the eligible active exchange with the highest trading volume

This produces a transparent crypto benchmark price tied to a specific market with demonstrable liquidity, making PRIMKT particularly useful for valuation, reporting, and institutional pricing workflows.

Why Use CoinAPI PRIMKT Indexes?

Selecting a market price sounds simple, until the same asset trades on dozens of exchanges at different prices.

For institutions, funds, accounting teams, and valuation providers, choosing a price arbitrarily isn't enough. The pricing methodology should be transparent, repeatable, and based on objective market activity.

CoinAPI PRIMKT Indexes solve this by systematically identifying the principal market for each asset pair and using its latest traded price as the reference value.

With CoinAPI you can:

  • Build principal-market-based crypto reference pricing into your applications
  • Support digital asset valuation, NAV calculations, and financial reporting
  • Use a transparent methodology based on observable market activity
  • Reduce reliance on illiquid or inactive trading venues
  • Retrieve both real-time and historical benchmark prices through a standardized API
  • Integrate pricing suitable for portfolio valuation, audit support, and institutional analytics
Methodology

How CoinAPI Calculates PRIMKT Indexes

CoinAPI determines the Principal Market Price through a systematic methodology designed to identify the most liquid active spot market for each asset pair.

1. Exchange Selection

CoinAPI evaluates eligible cryptocurrency exchanges that participate in the PRIMKT methodology.

2. Spot Market Selection

Only SPOT trading pairs are considered. Futures, perpetual contracts, options, and other derivatives are excluded so the index reflects the underlying spot market.

3. Activity Period

Each exchange must have recorded trades during the previous 15 minutes to remain eligible. Markets with no recent activity are excluded to prevent stale pricing.

4. Lookup Period

CoinAPI analyzes the previous 60 minutes of market activity to determine which eligible exchange recorded the highest trading volume for the selected asset pair.

5. Principal Market Determination

The eligible exchange with the highest trading volume during the Lookup Period becomes the principal market.

6. Index Value Calculation

The PRIMKT Index value is set to the latest traded price from the selected principal market.

This methodology produces a benchmark price that is:

  • Based on observable market activity
  • Derived from the most liquid eligible spot market
  • Updated using recent trading information
  • Transparent and repeatable
  • Suitable for real-time and historical analysis
Fields

What's Included in CoinAPI PRIMKT Data?

Depending on the endpoint, the CoinAPI Indexes API returns calculated index values, timestamps, metadata, and information about the selected principal market.

Benefits of PRIMKT Indexes

PRIMKT provides a transparent crypto benchmark price by selecting the most liquid active market for each asset pair instead of averaging prices across multiple exchanges.

By selecting the highest-volume active spot market, PRIMKT delivers a cryptocurrency reference price that is easy to understand, document, and apply consistently across production systems.

This makes it valuable for workflows that require a clearly defined and repeatable pricing methodology, including:

  • Digital asset valuation and portfolio pricing
  • Fair value measurement workflows
  • NAV calculations and financial reporting
  • Audit support and independent price verification
  • Risk management and institutional market analytics
  • Benchmark construction and valuation policies
Comparison

PRIMKT Index vs a Single-Exchange Price

A single-exchange price always comes from one specific trading venue, regardless of whether that venue represents the broader market. A PRIMKT Index first identifies the principal market — the eligible active exchange with the highest trading volume — and then uses the latest traded price from that market.

Comparison

PRIMKT Index vs VWAP

Although both methodologies produce crypto reference prices, they answer different questions. PRIMKT identifies the principal market and uses its latest traded price. VWAP combines prices from multiple markets and calculates a volume-weighted average.

Transparent and Auditable Methodology

Reliable benchmark pricing depends on a methodology that users can understand and explain.

This transparency helps institutions, auditors, funds, and valuation teams document how crypto reference prices are produced and apply the methodology consistently across reporting and operational workflows.

CoinAPI documents the PRIMKT methodology so users can see:

  • how eligible exchanges are selected
  • why only SPOT markets are included
  • how active markets are identified
  • how the principal market is determined
  • why inactive exchanges are excluded
  • how the final benchmark price is selected

Custom PRIMKT Indexes

Enterprise clients can work with CoinAPI to build custom Principal Market Price indexes tailored to internal valuation, reporting, or benchmark requirements.

Index methodology, delivery, infrastructure, and licensing are defined as part of each Enterprise deployment.

Custom indexes can be configured around:

  • selected cryptocurrency assets
  • custom exchange eligibility rules
  • custom reference assets
  • proprietary valuation methodologies
  • industry-specific benchmarks
  • internal reporting policies
  • branded financial products
  • specialized institutional workflows
